 The City of Norfolk has offered peaceful cemetery settings toarea residents since 1825 when City Council closedSt. Paul's Church Cemetery and opened Cedar Grove Cemetery. Norfolk owns and operates eight cemeteries: Cedar Grove, Elmwood, West Point, Magnolia, Riverside, Hebrew, Calvary and Forest Lawn. Our most modern garden type cemetery, Forest Lawn, was established in 1906 on what had been a 165-acre farm north of Wards Corner on Granby Street. The Bureau of Cemeteries continues to provide service that is sensitive to the needs of families, as it has done for the last 180 years.
Maintenance of the historic burial ground is mindful of the eternal bond between the City and the families whose loved ones are memorialized there. The maintenance of the cemeteries ensures the preservation of a valuable part of Norfolk's cultural heritage.
We provide excellent customer service in a polite, courteous and professional manner, as well as maintain records to provide assistance in arranging and conducting nearly 1,000 funeral services each year. Our service includes the sale of 500 graves per year and the installation of 600 foundations for grave markers. |
