Welcome to the Norfolk Bureau of Cemeteries’ genealogical research page.

To perform a genealogical search, complete the form below and click “Submit”. The completed form will be e-mailed to our Genealogy Information Specialist for research. Please allow three business days for response to your inquiry. The more information you are able to include in the Genealogical Research Form, the easier it will be to locate interment information.

Are you planning to visit one of our cemeteries and need assistance finding a grave location or monument information?

Please contact our Genealogy Information Specialist at 757-441-2654 at least two to three business days prior to your visit. Providing your request in advance will enable our cemetery staff to research and prepare information so it will be ready at the cemetery office upon your arrival.

Additional genealogical information can be accessed in the Sargeant Memorial Room (SMR), which will be located at the Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library at 111 W. Ocean View Avenue, as of January 12, 2012.

This current non-circulating collection includes a variety of books and periodicals about Norfolk and Virginia, as well as Norfolk maps, photographs, high school yearbooks, and city directories for the Hampton Roads region. Nearly 200 years of Norfolk newspapers on microfilm are available.
