Daun S. Hester was elected to Norfolk City Council in 1996 representing Superward 7. Mrs. Hester is a co-owner of Hester, Hester & Associates, Ltd an education and training consulting firm. A life long resident of Norfolk, she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State University and holds a Master of Arts degree in Education and Human Development from George Washington University.
Ms. Hester chairs the City Council’s Church Street/Huntersville and the Park Place/Lambert’s Point Task Forces and serves on the Southside, Five Points, and Fairmont Park Task Forces. The task forces guide neighborhood and commercial development. She represents the city on the Planning Council and the Empowerment 2010 Board which she chairs. Mrs. Hester serves as vice-chair for the Economic and Community Business Development Committee. She serves on the Board of the National League of Cities and as the board liaison to the Council on Youth, Education and Families. Mrs. Hester was instrumental in establishing the first “Norfolk Youth Council.”
Mrs. Hester has extensive experience in public education, serving as a special education teacher, department chairperson, teacher specialist, director of an alternative school, coordinator for pupil personnel and assistant principal during her twenty-two year career with Norfolk Public Schools.
She serves in a volunteer capacity as the co-chair for Norfolk United – Facing Race, a city-wide initiative to foster honest dialogue on race and reconciliation. She is a member of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Mrs. Hester serves on the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center Board of Directors and as the Secretary for the Board of Visitors at Virginia State University
Her accomplishments include being recognized by the YWCA with the “Mary Helen Thomas” award for her contribution toward the elimination of racism in 2004, as the “Citizen of the Year” in 2004 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tidewater Post 4809, the 2001 Humanitarian of the Year by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., named the 2005 Citizen of the Year by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and awarded the Vivian C. Mason Meritorious Award by the Urban League.
Mrs. Hester is married to Quincey Hester, Sr., and they have two sons. She is a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.
