2/1/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. DARIN MONTA SATTERWHITE

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Darin Monta Satterwhite, 29-years-old, to 8 years in prison for the October 2007 conviction of 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder. A jury recommended the sentence after convicting Satterwhite of the charge in a 3 day trial. The jury found Satterwhite not guilty of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Satterwhite was charged after the October 19, 2005, shooting of Dominic Joyner in the 300 block of State Street. Joyner suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head, neck, and chest. He died from his injuries in a hospital 6 weeks after the shooting.

2/4/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. HENRY A. ALBRITTON

Today, Henry A. Albritton, 38-years-old, pleaded guilty in Norfolk Circuit Court to 1 count of First Degree Murder. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 25, 2008. Albritton was charged after the April 4, 2007, stabbing death of his girlfriend, Rickita Ryant, 23-years-old, in her apartment in the 9600 block of 10th Bay Street.


2/5/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. MALE JUVENILE, 14-YEARS-OLD

Today, a judge in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court sentenced a male juvenile, 14-years-old, to the Department of Juvenile Justice until his 21st birthday for the January 10, 2008, convictions of 1 count of 1st Degree Murder, 1 count of Attempted Robbery, and 2 counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. His trial and sentencing hearing were handled in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court because of his age at the time of the offense. He was 13-years-old. His name is not being listed here for the same reason. He was charged after the November 23, 2007, shooting death of Dominic Young, 15-years-old, during the attempted robbery of the Enlanka Restaurant in the 700 block of Church Street. Three other people, 1 adult male and 2 male juveniles, are also facing charges in connection with this crime.


2/7/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. TANIKA L. DURAND

Today, a jury in Portsmouth Circuit Court recommended Tanika L. Durand, 22-years-old, serve 17 years in prison after convicting her in a 7 day trial of 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder. Durand’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 21, 2008. Durand was charged after the August 10, 2006, death of her 10-month-old son, Anthony Durand. The Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney was assigned by the Portsmouth
Circuit Court to handle this case as a special prosecution

2/8/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. PAUL JEROME MCEVOY

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Paul Jerome McEvoy, 42-years-old, to 10 years in prison with all of the time suspended for the November 7, 2007, convictions of 1 count of Electronic Means for Procuring Minors and 1 count of Attempts to Commit Noncapital Felony. He previously pleaded guilty to those charges. The judge then ordered McEvoy to be on supervised probation for 10 years, to register as a sex offender with the Virginia State Police, to receive sex offender treatment, and to have his computer use supervised. McEvoy was charged in December 2006 after communicating online with what he thought was a female juvenile. The person he’d been communicating with was a Norfolk Police Detective.


2/12/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. KENTREAL ANDRE BEASLEY

Today, Kentreal Andre Beasley, 19-years-old, pleaded guilty in Norfolk Circuit Court to 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder and 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. The judge then sentenced Beasley to 40 years in prison with 26 years suspended, resulting in 14 years of active incarceration for the convictions. Beasley was charged after the September 22, 2005, shooting death of Peter Torres, 32-years-old. Torres was shot in the 800 block of Goff Street. His friends drove him to a store in the 2500 block of Monticello Avenue and called for help. Torres died 2 days later in a hospital.


2/14/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. SWINDELL LEONARD DAVIS

Today, a judge in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court held a preliminary hearing for Swindell Leonard Davis, 29-years-old. The judge certified 11 felony charges against Davis to Norfolk Circuit Court. He is charged with 6 counts of Attempted Indecent Liberties and 5 counts of Carnal Knowledge of a Minor. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for March 5, 2008, when the Grand Jury meets. Davis was charged after Norfolk Police Detectives investigated reports of sexual activity between him and 2 female juveniles on January 7, 2008, and January 8, 2008.


2/15/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. JAMES EDWARD MINGO

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced James Edward Mingo, 52-years-old, to 4 years in prison with 3 years 10 months and 15 days suspended, resulting in 45 days of active incarceration for the October 23, 2007, convictions of 1 count of Carnal Knowledge of a Minor and 1 count of Indecent Liberties. He previously pleaded guilty to those charges. Mingo was charged after medical tests showed he was the father of a child born to his stepdaughter, Stepfanie Mingo. She was 17-years-old when she gave birth. The child, a baby girl named Sylena Mingo, died 2 months after being born. Sylena’s mother and grandmother, Stepfanie and Angela Mingo, 48-years-old, were charged and convicted in her death. Both are now incarcerated.


2/22/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. EUGENE JARRAD ANDERSON

Today, a judge sentenced Eugene Jarrad Anderson, 24-years-old, to 2 years and 6 months in prison with 1 year suspended, resulting in 1 year and 6 months of active incarceration, for the November 20, 2007, convictions of 1 count of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor and 1 count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. He pleaded guilty to those charges in a previous court hearing. Anderson was charged after Norfolk Police Detectives found a cell phone which contained a picture of his 2-year-old son holding a gun. The Detectives were investigating 2 incidents of gunfire in the Norview area when they came across the phone and the picture.


2/27/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. GLENROY ROY GOLDING

Today, Glenroy Roy Golding, 33-years-old, pleaded guilty in Norfolk Circuit Court to 1 count of Assault, a misdemeanor. The judge then sentenced Golding to 11 months in custody with all of the time suspended for the conviction. Golding was charged after the October 15, 2006, stabbing death of Devon Brathwaite, 23-years-old, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3160 in the 100 block of A View Avenue. A party was being held there. Four men were charged in connection with this crime. Golding and another man have now been prosecuted. The prosecutions of the remaining 2 men continue.


2/29/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. DAVID KARPF

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced David Karpf, 26-years-old, to 22 months in custody with 12 months suspended, resulting in 10 months of active time to serve, for the August 28, 2007, convictions of 1 count of Involuntary Manslaughter and 1 count of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). The judge also ordered Karpf to complete the Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP) and pay a $200 fine. Karpf was charged after a single car fatal wreck on May 17, 2007, at Eastbound I-264 and Northbound Military Highway. Karpf was driving the car with 3 passengers when the car left the exit ramp and hit a tree. Jennifer Anderson, a passenger, died as a result of the wreck.


2/29/08 – COMMONWEALTH VS. TORRON EUGENE LUCAS

Today, a judge in Norfolk Circuit Court sentenced Torron Eugene Lucas, 21-years-old, to 38 years in prison with 5 years suspended, resulting in 33 years of active incarceration for the October 1, 2007, convictions of 2 counts of Attempted Robbery, 1 count of Conspiracy, and 2 counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He was found guilty of the charges during a bench trial. Lucas was charged after the April 15, 2007, attempted robbery and shooting at the Shell Gas Station and Convenience Store in the 7700 block of Granby Street. Lucas was to be the
getaway driver for the armed robber, Paris Wynn. Norfolk Police Officer Chris Scallon was off duty getting gas for his car when he observed the robbery in progress and intervened to protect the 2 cashiers. Upon seeing Scallon, Lucas yelled to Wynn, warning him of the presence of a police officer. After entering the store, Scallon identified himself as a police officer and ordered Wynn to drop his weapon, who instead opened fire on Scallon. Scallon returned fire with his service weapon. The exchange of gunfire lasted 15 minutes and ended with Wynn being shot in the head and chest. Wynn died the next day at a hospital from his wounds. Scallon, Lucas, and the 2 cashiers did not suffer physical injuries. On May 11, 2007, Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney John R. Doyle, III, announced his decision to not prosecute Scallon for his actions, citing his use of deadly force was justified under the circumstances.
