Norfolk General District Courts

Traffic Court

The Norfolk General District Court, Traffic Division hears cases in which a person is charged with a traffic offense.  Many traffic offenses can be prepaid.  For those cases the court appearance can be waived; that is, the defendant may chose to pay his fine and court cost in person or by mail prior to the court date and does not need to appear in court..

Location

There are two (2) traffic courts.  Courtroom #1 and Courtroom #2.  Both courts are located on the first (1st) floor.  The Clerk’s office for Traffic #1 is located on the back hall in Room 165.  The Clerk’s office for Traffic #2 is in Room 152 in the front hall to your right after you come thru the metal detector.

Your Court Date

You need to arrive at the courthouse before 9:00 am.  You will have to walk from the parking garages and lots to the building and please be aware that you will have to wait in line to pass through the metal detector.  Your summons should state whether you are in Traffic 1 or Traffic 2.  Please make sure you are in the correct courtroom.

ALL FINES AND COSTS ARE DUE THE DAY OF COURT

Military personnel should check in with the liaison in the courtroom

If you are charged with DUI you need to be at court at 8:00 a.m. to see the ASAP representative.

.

Continuances

You can request a continuance the 1st time by mail or in person at the clerk’s office.  Use the mail at your own risk.  Your continuance will be set for the Officer‘s next court date.

Any continuance request after the first time will go before the Judge.

Appeals

You can appeal your conviction to Circuit Court within ten (10) days of the conviction date.  The ten day period begins to run on the day following the conviction.  If the tenth day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday or any day which the clerk's office is closed as authorized by statute, the appeal may be noted on the next day the clerk's office is authorized to open.  The appeal may be noted by the defendant or his attorney.
