Norfolk General District Courts

Small Claims Court

Subpoenas

If a subpoena is necessary in order to insure the presence of your witness, you should ask the clerk’s office, at least ten days in advance of the hearing day, for the subpoena.

Your Court Date

You should arrive before 2:00pm.  You will have to walk from the parking garages and lots to the building and please be aware there may be a line at the metal detector.

Once you have arrived, check the docket sheet outside the courtroom you are to appear in for your name and page number.  If you filed the claim, you are the PLAINTIFF, if someone filed the claim against you, you are the DEFENDANT.  Once you have found your page number, check in with the clerk in the courtroom.  If you arrive late and the Judge has already started court, have a seat and wait for your case to be called.  DO NOT APPROACH the clerk once court has started.

Removal to General District Court

The defendant has the right to remove the case to the general district court by completing the Removal to General District Court form on the back of the civil warrant and giving it to the clerk or judge.  This notice must be filed before the Judge decides the case.
