The City of Norfolk’s Summer Municipal Internship Program FAQ’s

1. When is the program?

It is an eight week program that runs from early June through late July or early August. It is a full time employment program so you will need to be available to work 40 hours a week. Most of the internships have hours that go from around 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

2. When can I apply?

The program has a specific period for application which will run from February 15 until May 16, 2008.

3. How do I apply?

Complete the online City of Norfolk employment application and attach a copy of your college transcripts. (Unofficial copies will be accepted.) If either of these documents is not submitted then you will not be considered for an internship.

4. Where do I get the application?

The application is online at the City of Norfolk website.

5. What are the educational requirements?

At a minimum, students must be “standing juniors” to be eligible. That means that your transcript must indicate that you have successfully completed half of your courses and that you have successfully completed some 300 level courses in your major.

6. How are interns selected?

You apply for the program. Your application will be screened for all projects where your academic and any work experience would apply.

7. When will I know if I am being considered for an internship program?

Screening and filling positions will start in early March and continue throughout May. If you are considered for a particular internship, you will be contacted by the City of Norfolk Human Resources Department representative concerning an interview. The process will include two to three interviews. The best candidate based on transcripts, interviews and recommendations will be offered the internship position.

8. What is the compensation?

Juniors and Seniors will be paid $8.40 per hour as Intern I’s. Graduate students will be paid at $10.71 per hour as Intern II’s. To be compensated as an Intern II, a student must supply a transcript showing successful completion of graduate courses in his or her area of study. Being accepted to a graduate program does not qualify a student for Intern II compensation.
