How to Help

The Center has a number of ways you can help.

Want to make a difference for our homeless animals?

Volunteering at the shelter is one of the most rewarding ways to directly help animals during their transition. Positions range from animal caretakers to office help to providing foster care for animals with the greatest needs. Please consider offering your time and talents to make life better for animals who are in transition.

ARE THERE ITEMS I CAN DONATE?

We can use many household items to make our animals' stay more comfortable.  We're always in need of towels, blankets, and comforters. Canned pet food, non-clumping cat litter, toys and treats are always welcome.  For a complete list of needed items, check out our WISH LIST.  Feel free to share it with friends, neighbors, co-workers and civic groups!

HOW CAN I MAKE A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION?

We are a municipal animal control agency.  Our basic financial needs are funded through taxpayer contribution.  City funding provides for basic food, shelter and preventive vacccines.  A number of our animals arrive ill, injured, or otherwise in need of additional care.  We are fortunate to be able to provide this care through generous contributions to the Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center.  Financial gifts to Friends of NACC are used to treat heartworm disease in dogs, mend broken limbs, and support shelter adoption effforts.  Please consider a gift to this worthy cause.

what other ways can i directly help animals?

ADOPT A SHELTER PET!  Many people don't realize how many different shapes, sizes, ages and breeds of animals we receive.  You'll likely find a perfect fit for your household at the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center.  Yes, we receive mostly dogs and cats, but we often have birds, rabbits and other small animals as well.  Check us out before you go anywhere else.  Our low adoption fees also include primary vaccines, flea prevention, spay or neuter surgery, microchip and more.  You won't find a better deal anywhere!  Plus...you'll be saving a life!

How else can i help?

Please be sure to have your own pets spayed or neutered.  The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center receives nearly 6,000 animals annually.  Unwanted litters are easily prevented.  There are a number of low-cost spay/neuter options available to pet owners.  Please see a complete list of options for local spay/neuter resources.
