EVMS-Focus: A Prehospital Ultrasound Research Study

EMS Focus Brochure

RESEARCH STUDY ANNOUNCEMENT

We are pleased to announce a new research study in the City of Norfolk as a joint effort between the City of Norfolk Department of Fire-Rescue and Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

The purpose of the study is to determine the utility and accuracy of ultrasound technology in critically ill trauma patients and victims of cardiac arrest in an attempt to rapidly diagnose potential threats to life in the prehospital setting by City of Norfolk Paramedics.

The research team anticipates no adverse effects to any study participant as ultrasound technology is extremely safe and all current standards of safety and quality will be in effect. Informational community meetings will be held at:

Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library:                                       10/26/11 @ Noon

Lafayette Branch Library:                                                                 10/27/11 @ 12:30 PM

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Brickhouse Classrooms:  10/27/11 @ 7 PM

Little Creek Branch Library:                                                              10/28/11 @ 1 PM

You may view the full research protocol here: EMS Focus Protocol.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding this research study, please contact the Principal Investigator
Dr Knapp at 757.388.3397.

OPT-OUT POLICY

Although this ultrasound research initiative is exceptionally low risk, advanced identification of study participants is impossible as is consent after cardiac arrest or major trauma. Therefore we have developed a mechanism by which any member of the community may opt-out of participating in the research project. The opt-out policy will be explained verbally during community meetings and in writing on both the informational handout and on the website.

Any member of the community may notify the Investigator team either by phone, email or letter. A list of the names and addresses will be kept on a “No Scan” list.  This No Scan list will placed in every study packet. In addition, we will send those who choose to “opt-out” a medic alert bracelet indicating the “No Scan” status of the patient.
