Norfolk Fire-Rescue

Investigations

Norfolk Fire-Rescue is credited with having the first multi agency Environmental Crimes Taskforce in Virginia, which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting any environmental or hazardous materials violations within the city of Norfolk.  This is accomplished by a four man  team comprised of three Fire / HazMat Inspectors and one police officer operating under the City Attorneys office.  Members within the team are cross-trained in both fire and police and all possess full police powers.

The Environmental Crimes Taskforce investigates an assortment of cases from demolition sites and illegal dumping, to any other illegal act that violates environmental city, state, or federal laws.  Members of the team work closely with the EPA in many of the different cases.  The Taskforce handles over 1,000 cases per year and averages $300,000 in fines per year.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue offers Environmental Crimes Training and hosts two to three environmental conferences per year.  Information concerning Environment Crimes Training can be obtained by calling (757) 664-6604 or emailing     james.stanek@norfolk.gov
