Neighborhood Leadership and Education Academy and Neighborhood University
Fall 2009 Proposed Schedule
The Leadership and Education Academy is an advanced study program of the Neighborhood University targeted at civic league members and community organizers. The program trains participants on the functions of city government, services and programs and offers an intimate study environment. Classes will be taught by city officials and department staff, including a session with Norfolk City Manager, Regina V.K. Williams. Participants will be asked to commit to attending all classes within the four-week program, and will be given a certificate of completion at a graduation ceremony. Classes will be held October 7 through October 31, including a special tour of Norfolk on Saturday, October 10 and the graduation ceremony on Saturday, October 31.
Example of class topics include:
- Government and Community – Working towards a Common Goal
- Civic Leadership Development – Community Grassroots Planning, Organizing, and Community Capacity Development
- Ins and Outs of the City’s Budget Processes
- Ins and Outs of the City’s core services: Codes, Police, Fire, Public Works, and Transportation
- Ins and Outs of the City’s Community and Volunteer Programs: Community Outreach, Keep Norfolk Beautiful, RPOS, CERT, Neighborhood Watch, etc.
