Norfolk Youth Council
The Norfolk Youth Council (NYC) was created as a result of several citywide activities. In 1996, The City of Norfolk hosted a forum entitled Neighbors All. Norfolk residents were asked what is important to them in preparing for the future. They said, among other things, that youth are our future.
In 1998, Norfolk City Council approved a resolution creating a Norfolk Youth Council. The Norfolk City Council established the Norfolk Youth Council because they wanted to hear what young people have to say. The Norfolk Youth Council focuses on issues concerning youth, recommend policies to City Council, and help in planning positive experiences for Norfolk’s young people.
NYC involves the recruitment of students from Norfolk public schools (middle and high school) and private schools as representatives to address youth issues, concerns and present in the form of policy recommendations to Norfolk City Council.
In order to be eligible for consideration to become a NYC member, a letter of Interest and application must be completed and returned to the City’s Clerk Office. NYC applications can be obtained primarily through your Guidance Department in respective schools during specific recruitment months.
NYC functions include:
- Establish priorities for the delivery of youth services in the City of Norfolk
- Identify specific and measurable goal to be achieved each year on behalf of Norfolk youth
- Explore issues affecting City government and determine their impact on youth
- Assist other youth in the community to understand and appreciate the workings of City government
