The City of Norfolk is comprised of many diverse neighborhoods, some as old as the City itself. Many neighborhoods are experiencing a rebirth of their heritage, while others are just establishing their heritage. Regardless of age or heritage, each of the City's neighborhoods is a special place for its residents, places to be treasured and nurtured. The ability of each resident to identify with their neighborhood contributes to a sense of community pride.

To ensure that all its neighborhoods are recognized, the City developed the Neighborhood Identification Sign program for the fabrication and installation of new neighborhood identification signs. To guarantee a uniform appearance throughout the City, a single neighborhood identification sign design featuring the City's mermaid logo was selected.

A. Civic Leagues may apply for neighborhood signs for the neighborhood in their jurisdiction by filling out and submitting the Neighborhood Sign Application. Please note the proposed location for the sign that is included in the application will be reviewed to ensure that the location meets installation guidelines.

Q. Who will maintain our neighborhood sign once it's installed?
A. Each civic league has the opportunity to personalize the area around its neighborhood sign by landscaping and maintaining the area. If your civic league chooses to landscape, the planting material should be selected using the Sign Landscaping for Sun or Sign Landscaping for Shade plant lists prepared by the City's Department of Recreation Parks and Open Space. The purchase, installation, and maintenance of any landscaping will be the responsibility of the appropriate civic league.
