Technology Support Unit

The Technology Support Unit (TSU) of the Strategic Management Division is tasked with the development and security of the technology and computer systems within the Department. The research and development of a new CAD, Mobile Office and Records Management System is being completed. With the implementation of these new systems, the Department is prepared to integrate new technologies into existing systems so that police services may continue to improve and meet the needs of the people of Norfolk.

Computer and network security is a major responsibility of the TSU. New challenges test the unit’s capabilities with email viruses, new VCIN/NCIC regulations, and ever-growing use of computers by departmental personnel.

Advancements in technology and implementation of new systems require allocating substantial time for training. Not only must all end users be trained, but also the TSU staff must receive training in order to train others. Without proper training, the new technologies and systems would provide no benefit. The TSU staff is committed to having all personnel trained in systems usage to maximize the efficiencies offered by new technology. TSU trains or coordinates the training for hundreds of officers and civilian staff from 13 different agencies in Records Management, VCIN/NCIC certifications, word processing, and basic computer skills each year.

TSU is always researching new technologies in an effort to assist officers and the public in better service and protection.  It is through TSU established technology that the department is able to better communicate with in the city and with outside agencies, again assisting citizens and officers with better service.
