Mission:
It is the mission of the Department of Public Works to
build, maintain and operate the physical facilities that support and enhance the
lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses
and visitors including the City’s street network, traffic management system,
storm water system, and waste collection system.
What does Public Works do?
The Department of Public Works is comprised of 10 divisions that function collectively to maintain and operate the city’s infrastructure. Our staff works hard to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, your streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained, among other services. We are committed to our mission and to addressing the concerns of our customers. Roosevelt Gardens Neighborhood |
In May, street resurfacing in the Roosevelt Gardens Neighborhood will take place on
Barbara Drive, Beatty Street, Calvin Court, Corbett Avenue, Dean Drive,
Elaine Court, Friden Court, Friden Street, Larrymore Avenue (between
Friden and Halprin), Monty Court, Tarrallton Drive, Wharton Court and
Wharton Street. |

Colley Avenue |
Through late May, there will
be lane reductions and traffic shifts on Colley Avenue between
Fairfax Avenue and Raleigh Avenue for the
HRSD Ghent Area Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project.
Access to residences, businesses, schools and the hospital will be maintained.
Starting Thursday morning (5/10/12 - 5/13/12, weather permitting) -
Colley Avenue southbound will be closed to through traffic between Olney
Road and Fairfax Avenue. Detour: From Colley Avenue southbound, take
Olney Road to Duke Street, turn right onto Duke Street, turn left onto
Brambleton Avenue, arrive at Colley Avenue. |

Llewellyn Avenue |
Through late May traffic
will be reduced on to one lane in each direction on Llewellyn Avenue
between Virginia Beach Boulevard and Westover Avenue for the
HRSD Ghent Area Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project.
Access to residences and businesses will be maintained. |

Newport Avenue |
Through mid-August, watch
for phased closures to through traffic on
Newport Avenue between Warren Street and North Shore Road for utility project.
Access to Hairton Court,
Warren Street, the Fitness & Wellness Center, and North Shore Road will be maintained. |

38th Street |
Through late May, 38th Street between
Llewellyn Avenue
and Colonial Avenue
will be closed to through traffic for utility work. Motorists will be
detoured to 35th Street
via Llewellyn Avenue
and Newport Avenue.
Access to residences and businesses will be maintained. |
