Utilities - Water Distribution

The Division of Water Distribution helps deliver high quality water to our customers' taps across the City and beyond.

This division, made up of 64 employees, builds and maintains the complex system that transports water from our treatment plants to Norfolk homes, businesses, and the fire hydrant on your street.

Water Distribution employees also turn on water for new customers every day.  This division installs more than 300 new water service connections to residential and commercial customers each year.

  Our crews:
  • Repair water main breaks,
  • Fix service line leaks,
  • Maintain water meters and fire hydrants, and
  • Oversee leak detection and cross connection programs.

We are at your service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Call us at (757) 823-1000 if you notice:

  • Water leaks,
  • Low water pressure,
  • Rusty water, or
  • Odors in your water.

We can promptly repair such problems.  In fact, the Water Distribution division maintains:

  • more than 800 miles of water mains, ranging in size from 2" to 52",
  • 4,000 fire hydrants,
  • 17,000 valves, and
  • 68,000 water service lines.

During fiscal year 2004 (July 2003 - June 2004), Water Distribution:

  • installed 287 new water service taps,
  • repaired more than 2,300 water service leaks,
  • repaired 263 water mains,
  • painted and tested more than 1,700 fire hydrants,
  • surveyed 564,210 feet of pipe and 555 fire hydrants for leaks, and
  • performed preventive maintenance on more than 300 water valves.

How Long Will It Take To Fix The Problem?

We pride ourselves on fast response and repair.  Most repairs can be made quickly.  However, some problems are more complex and require more time to complete.  Specifically, some water repairs require digging up underground pipes or excavating the water line.

In those cases, we must contact Miss Utility and order utility markings to identify any other utility that might be in the area.  This process can take anywhere from 3 to 48 hours and is required by State law in order to protect residents and the repair crew members.

For more information, contact Dennis Hairston, Assistant Superintendent of Water Distribution, at (757) 823-1004.
