The Department of Utilities'
Wastewater Division ensures that wastewater in Norfolk is managed
effectively to protect our residents' health, safety, and quality of
life.
This division maintains and repairs the system that
takes wastewater away from Norfolk homes, businesses, and
facilities, and conveys it to wastewater treatment plants that are
operated by the Hampton Roads
Sanitation District Commission (HRSD).
The Wastewater Division is made up
of 88 employees who are at your service 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 365 days a year.
The Wastewater Division
maintains 126 wastewater pump stations and 867 miles of wastewater
mains. This wastewater collection system, also known as the
sanitary sewer system, transfers and pumps millions of gallons of
sewage to Hampton Roads Sanitation
District for treatment.

How Long Will It Take To Fix The
Problem?
We pride ourselves on fast response and repair.
Most repairs can be made quickly. However, some problems are
more complex and require more time to complete. Specifically,
some sewer repairs require digging up underground pipes, or
excavating the sewer line.
In those cases, we must contact
Miss Utility and order
utility markings to identify any other utility that might be in the
area. This process can take anywhere from 3 to 48 hours and is required by
State law in order to protect residents and the repair crew members.
