2007 Legends of Music Concert and Induction Ceremony

NOTE: On April 18, a free concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Roper Theater on Granby Street. Tickets are available at the Virginia Arts Festival box office at MacArthur Center on a first-come, first-served basis.

What do a baton, piano, saxophone, guitar and a general have in common?

They’re the tools of the trade for the "Fab 5" – the five artists, musicians and entertainers who have been selected for induction into the City of Norfolk’s, Legends of Music Walk of Fame. The announcement was made by Mayor Paul Fraim on Tuesday, March 20.. The inductees include:

Clarence Clemons - The Chesapeake native is best known as the saxophone player with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Clemons is also an accomplished recording artist and actor.

General Norman Johnson - Born in the Huntersville section of Norfolk, Johnson first gained fame as the lead singer with the "Showmen". He later formed the group "Chairmen of the Board". Johnson has recorded a number of big hits, including "It Will Stand" and "Give Me Just a Little More Time".

Pat Curtis - Norfolk’s own "Piano Man" has worked with some of the entertainment industry’s greatest performers. Curtis, the recipient of Norfolk’s first "Legends of Music Lifetime Achievement Award", has literally donated thousands of hours of his time and talent to a countless list of charitable organizations and groups.

Jo Ann Falletta - The Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Norfolk has been described by the New York Times "as one of the finest conductors of her generation". Ms. Falletta is the recipient of the most prestigious conducting awards and a prolific recording artist.

The Phelps Brothers - The Phelps Brothers grew up in South Norfolk in the early 1900’s. After winning a talent contest in New York, the Phelps Brothers signed a recording contract with Decca Records. The brothers appeared in a series of cowboy movies while under contract to Paramount and RKO. The brothers were also prolific song writers and entertainers. Despite their success, "Chesapeake’s Singing Cowboys" always claimed South Norfolk as their home.

The formal induction ceremony for the five honorees will be held April 18 at 3:00 p.m. when their medallions are installed on Granby Street. Clemons, Johnson, Falletta and Curtis will be present for the ceremony and the Phelps Bothers, who are deceased, will be represented by family members, including Bobbie and Ed Beard. A free evening concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Roper Theater on Granby Street. Tickets are available at the Virginia Arts Festival Box office at MacArthur Center on a first come first served basis.
