Come Volunteer with us!

The Bureau is looking for a few good men and women to assist us with administrative tasks, genealogy research and special events. If you are interested in helping with any of the following tasks, please click here to complete the required application and other forms. Students seeking community service hours are welcome!

CURRENT VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE NEEDED

Data Entry
The Bureau is in the process of transitioning our Cemetery Management System to Arc GIS 9.0. If you have considerable experience using Access databases and/or Arc GIS 9.0 we can use your help in updating our interment database. Hours available are Monday – Friday 9am to 3pm (or any part thereof). Cemetery assignment will vary.

General Typing & Filing
Cemetery records are kept in both digital and hard copy form. This requires typing of interment cards and filing of funeral service paperwork, etc. Hours available are Monday – Friday 9am to 3pm (or any part thereof). This assignment is for Calvary Cemetery located at 1600 St. Julian Avenue.

Genealogy Research
Currently, the Bureau is working with volunteers to provide “boots on the ground” comparisons of interment database information to monument epitaphs. This assignment requires walking around the assigned cemetery, locating burials, “mapping out” the interment and reporting your findings to the Genealogy Information Team. Hours available are Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm (or any part thereof). Cemetery assignment will depend on the interests of the participating volunteer(s).

Special Events
The Bureau will be hosting several special events on cemetery grounds in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and in recognition of some holidays. We will also partner with non-profits, such as the Friends of Norfolk's Historic Cemeteries, to raise funds for restoration and preservation projects throughout City of Norfolk cemeteries. Volunteers will assist with set up, clean up, registration and related tasks. Cemetery assignment and hours available will vary by event..
