Welcome to the website of the
Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office

The Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is responsible for the prosecution of all felony charges and some misdemeanor charges resulting from violations of the Criminal Code of Virginia which occur in the City of Norfolk.  The Office also handles certain civil matters which include forfeiture actions against property used in connection with crimes and violations of election laws.

The work of the Office is led by the Commonwealth’s Attorney; a constitutional officer elected by the citizens of Norfolk, and is supported by prosecutors, paralegals, legal secretaries, victim/witness advocates, and other professionals.  Each person in the Office works hard daily to ensure the efficient, effective, and ethical prosecution of defendants and comprehensive representation of crime victims and witnesses in the appropriate courts in the City:  Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, General District Court, and Circuit Court.

As one of the largest and busiest prosecutors’ offices in the state, the Office utilizes a team approach for organization.  Generally, everyone in the Office is assigned to 1 of 7 prosecution teams:  Drug Team, Gang Team, General Prosecution Team, Juvenile Team, Domestic Violence/Juvenile Violent Crime Team, Special Crimes Team, and Violent Crime Team. The Office’s Community Justice Initiative is in development and supports the teams by having a small group of prosecutors evaluate and integrate specialized resources and programs into the daily prosecution of cases. The Office’s Victim/Witness Assistance Program supports the teams by having advocates work with prosecutors on assigned cases.

In the community, the Office’s employees actively cultivate strong relationships with Norfolk’s citizens by attending meetings of civic leagues, taking part in programs at schools, and contributing in various other ways to similar groups in the City.  During each community outreach opportunity, we discuss the work of the Office with citizens and listen to their interests and concerns.  Simply put, we are always working toward a better understanding of the City we serve.
