Welcome to the website of the Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney.
The Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all felony charges and some misdemeanor charges resulting from violations of the Criminal Code of Virginia which occur in the City of Norfolk.
There are about 40 prosecutors in the Office, each of whom is responsible for the work necessary to complete his or her assigned cases in the appropriate courts in the City: Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court, General District Court, and Circuit Court.
The prosecutors are supported in the Office by approximately 50 paralegals, legal secretaries, victims’ rights advocates, and other professionals – making the Office staff nearly 100 people in size. In general, everyone in the Office is assigned to 1 of 6 teams. Each team handles certain types of cases.
The teams are: Drug, Gang, General Prosecution, Juvenile & Domestic Relations, Special Crimes, and Violent Crime/Gang.
Outside of the courthouses, the Office’s prosecutors actively cultivate strong relationships with Norfolk’s citizens by attending meetings of civic leagues, taking part in programs at schools, and contributing in various other ways to similar groups in Norfolk. During each community outreach opportunity, the prosecutors discuss their work with citizens and listen to citizens’ interests and concerns. Simply put, the Office’s prosecutors are always working toward a better understanding of the issues affecting the City.
