CEREMONIAL MATTER

 

Eileen Bunn, Dan Thorpe and Holly Ferguson, representatives from the American Cancer Society presented the Relay for Life, Rookie of the Year Award to the co-chairs of last year’s race to Councilman Wright and Councilwoman Hester who in return presented the Award to the City Manager.   The City of Norfolk raised $28,000.00 for the American Cancer Society in last year’s race.

R-13                               Councilman Winn moved that council’s election of Councilman Paul Riddick as Vice Mayor be ended effective January 23, 2007.

R-13A                             Councilman Winn moved that Councilman Anthony Burfoot be elected as Vice Mayor, effective January 23, 2007.

                                      Councilwoman Hester read a letter submitted by Norfolk United Facing Race offering to organize a series of race dialogue sessions in various locations around the city.

Smith, 9520 21st Bay Street, Apt., 1B; Bernard Thompson, 214 Hough Avenue; Lamar Brown, 2705 Harold Street; Donald Belin, 839 West 34th Street; Peter Green, 190 Springfield Avenue; Kelly Willie, 3503 Trant Street; John Hill, 2906 Mapleton Avenue; Joe Rose, 925 Elon Court; Roscoe Callaway, Campostella Civic League, 1503 Conoga Street; Sharon Gomes, 887 Norview Arch; and Joseph Ware, 3510 Pleasant Avenue, Apt. 2.

 

                   Cuyler Grimes, 1515 North Military Highway, from LEGIT Entrepreneurship Program spoke about giving back to her community by being involved with children and one day opening her own childcare center.  

 

                   Bilal Muhammad, 3127 Bapaume Avenue commented on police issues regarding his son at Janaf Shopping Center. 

 

                   Chuck Brewer, 222 Beck Street, commented that the community needed a place to discuss race relations. 

 

                   Carolyn Graddy, 1715 Canton Avenue, stated that she is in favor of Mr. Riddick retaining his title and asked that more be done to develop the neighborhoods. 


Carey Scott spoke on crime in Campostella and asked for more police presence there.
