Traffic Court
The Norfolk General District Court,
Traffic Division hears cases in which a person is charged with a
traffic offense. Many traffic offenses can be prepaid.
For those cases the court appearance can be waived; that is, the
defendant may chose to pay his fine and court cost in person or
by mail prior to the court date and does not need to appear in court..
There
are two (2) traffic courts.
Courtroom #1 and Courtroom #2.
Both courts are located on the first (1st) floor.
The Clerk’s office for Traffic #1 is located on the back
hall in Room 165.
The Clerk’s office for Traffic #2 is in Room 152 in the
front hall to your right after you come thru the metal detector.
You need to arrive
at the courthouse before 9:00 am.
You will have to walk from the parking garages and lots
to the building and please be aware that you will have to wait
in line to pass through the metal detector.
Your summons should state whether you are in Traffic 1
or Traffic 2. Please
make sure you are in the correct courtroom.
ALL FINES AND COSTS
ARE DUE THE DAY OF COURT
Military personnel
should check in with the liaison in the courtroom
If you are charged
with DUI you need to be at court at 8:00 a.m. to see the ASAP
representative.

You
can request a continuance the 1st time by mail
or in person at the clerk’s office.
Use the mail at your own risk.
Your continuance will be set for the Officer‘s next court date.
Any
continuance request after the first time will go before the Judge.
You can appeal your conviction to Circuit Court within ten (10)
days of the conviction date. The ten day period begins to
run on the day following the conviction. If the tenth day
falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday or any day which
the clerk's office is closed as authorized by statute, the appeal
may be noted on the next day the clerk's office is authorized
to open. The appeal may be noted by the defendant or his
attorney.
