Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center(NACC) is the City of Norfolk’s municipal animal sheltering facility. Our shelter is open-admission, providing safe haven for animals from the City of Norfolk.

We focus our efforts solely on our local animals in need.  Animals will never be turned away, regardless of species, age, health or temperament.

The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center cares for 600-700 animals each month, and nearly 6,000 animals each year.

Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center Joins Forces with Pets for Patriots

Mario and Kona Video - Pets for Patriots

The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center and Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects loyal adult shelter pets with our country's loyal service men and women, joined forces to increase the adoption of adult and other at-risk shelter pets. An estimated four million shelter dogs and cats are put to death every year, in spite of numerous studies proving the emotional and physical benefits of companion pets. Working with Pets for Patriots, Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center gives our veterans, service members and their families the gift of unconditional friendship and love while providing millions of dogs and cats a second chance at life.

Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers – active, reserve, National Guard, retired or veteran. Eligible adoptions must meet one of the following criteria: dogs or cats two years and older, dogs 40-pounds or larger regardless of age, and special needs dogs and cats.  All eligible adoptions will be half off of the regular $75 adoption fee. Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center will help any veteran in the community in the Pets for Patriots program find a needs- and lifestyle-appropriate pet. Joining Pets for Patriots is free to veterans and service members.

Service men and women interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes one or two business days, after which the military member can visit the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center for assistance in choosing a new pet friend.

Featured Pets

This week, we're featuring two wonderful cats who have been at the Adoption Center for quite some time.  "Natalia" is an Abyssinian-mix. She is a petite and quiet little girl. She would be the perfect addition for someone who likes the company of a pet without all of the shenanigans that can often accompany an animal.

"Dewey" is a confident and affectionate guy. He gets along well with other animals and would fit in with a busy household.

Both "Natalia" and "Dewey" are approximately two years old. Both are already sterilized and ready to head home today. They've  become favorites of staff and volunteers alike. The best news is that their adoption fees have been sponsored by Guardian Angels. Come check 'em out and take one of these incredible cats home today.
