Norfolk Animal Care And Adoption Center

Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center(NACC) is the City of Norfolk’s municipal animal sheltering facility. Our shelter is open-admission, providing safe haven for animals from the City of Norfolk. We focus our efforts solely on our local animals in need.  Animals are never turned away, regardless of species, age, health or temperament.

The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center cares for 600-700 animals each month, and nearly 6,000 animals each year.

we need volunteers!

While we eagerly look forward to warmer weather and putting winter behind us, those of us in the animal sheltering world know that with sun, sand and surf comes our most challenging time of the year.

We are about to embark on the time of year when NACC will receive between 500-700 animals a month during the summer. Just like us, when warm weather arrives, we head outdoors and so do many of our animal friends. With this comes an increased chance for mischief or tragedy.  Dog bites, animals running at-large, and animals more likely to lose the battle against automobiles are common occurences. Sadly, the summer is also known as "kitten season," a time when the shelter overflows with underage animals.

Last year in the month of June, we received 700 animals in that 30-day timeframe. 400 cats and nearly 300 dogs (and assorted others) needed the safe-haven provided by NACC.

More than other times of the year, we really need extra hands during the summer. If you have some time,we'd love to have you spend it with us.  Check out our volunteer page if you'd like to help animals in the shelter, or our foster care page if you'd like to help some of those numerous kittens on their journey to a new home.

We hope to see you soon!
