FIRE PREVENTION INSPECTIONS

The Norfolk Fire-Rescue Fire Prevention Division welcomes you and your business to the City of Norfolk. If you are a previous City of Norfolk business owner you may already be familiar with some of the requirements stipulated in the Norfolk Fire Prevention Code (NFPC). It is our desire to assist you with securing all of the necessary permits that are required under the NFPC. The Norfolk Fire Prevention Code is a combination of the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code published by the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA), NFPA #101 Life Safety Code and City of Norfolk amendments by ordinance.

Your business may be required to have a Fire Inspection completed prior to opening or shortly thereafter. For New Construction and Renovation the Building Official, with the Department of Planning and Community Development, can answer most of your questions. (Please see the section on Construction Permits)

Permits that may be applicable to your business include, but are not limited to, the "Storage, Dispensing, Use and Handling of Hazardous Materials", "Welding and/or Cutting", "Application of Flammable Finishes", "Storage of Compressed Gases", "Vehicle Repair Shops", "Dry Cleaning", "Removal of Underground Tanks", and "Fumigation and Thermal Insecticidal Fogging".
