If a project involves the use, development or any other activity that will impact a wetland, a wetland permit is required. In most cases, projects require permits from both the Norfolk Wetlands Board and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Bureau of Environmental Services will assist in determining which federal, state, or local agencies will need to review the project. Securing wetland permits may be required prior to approval of a project under other City development programs.
Coastal primary sand dunes and beaches are found along the majority of sites bordering the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in Norfolk. Development in these areas is regulated under local ordinance of the Norfolk Wetlands Board. If a project involves the use, development or any other activity that will impact a coastal primary sand dune or beach, a dune/beach permit is required. The Bureau of Environmental Services will determine whether or not a permit is required.
