Training Unit

The Training Unit's goal is to provide job specific training that will:

  • Improve job performance and proficiency
  • Meet or exceed the Department of Criminal Justice Service's (DCJS) training standards and requirements
  • Improve the quality of training with organizational goals in mind
  • Ensure the department’s philosophy and mandates are clearly understood

These goals operate under the Training Unit’s vision statement:

  • “To provide relevant and effective training in response to the educational needs of the Norfolk Police Department”

The Training Unit provides and coordinates training for all personnel, including:

  • Basic Recruit Training (Entry Level Law Enforcement Personnel)
  • In-Service Training
  • Firearms Training
  • Instructor Certification and Re-certification Training
  • Other specialized training
  • Providing training to outside agencies as directed and authorized by the Police Chief

Basic Recruit Academy

Basic Recruit Academy
The Basic Recruit Academy is a 24-week intensive classroom and hand-on skills environment that trains men and women to be Norfolk Police Officers. Some of the classes include Patrol Techniques, Ethics in Policing, Community Policing, Civil Unrest and Crowd Management, Civil Liability, and Basic Criminal Law. With each academy class, 15-40 members are challenged mentally, physically and academically to reach their goal of graduation.

Firearms Training

Firearms Training
Officers must attend Firearms Training annually; they are instructed in the use of their duty weapons, shotguns, and OC Spray. The Pistol Range is equipped with firing lanes, a FATS simulation room, an obstacle course and a classroom. Specialty classes have been offered in the proper use of gas masks and pepper ball guns.

Specialized training offered by the Training Unit includes:

  • In-Service Training
  • Diversity/Human Relations Training
  • Ethics Training
  • Terrorism Training
  • Uniformed Bicycle Patrol Operations School
  • Special Operations Team School
  • Radar School
  • ICS (Incident Command System)
