Record Release Services

Before requesting records, it is advised to review DMV's security policy regarding who is able to obtain records, and for what purposes. This information can be found here:
DMV Records release policy

Lien Satisfaction

What you need?

In order to complete a lien satisfaction, you will need to bring one of the following items.
You can bring in the title of the vehicle that has the lien information on it with the Title Lien Section signed off by the loan holder
Otherwise you can bring in a letter from the lien holder on their company letterhead.
Neither of these items can be copies, they must be originals.

Process

There are two ways this process can be completed.

  1. If your lender participates in Virginia's Electronic Lien program, the lender can electronically release the lien with DMV. DMV will then mail a Lien Satisfied title to your address on record, and DMV records will automatically reflect that your lien has been satisfied.
  2. If your lender is not a part of the above program, the lender can mail you the title to the car with the "Lien Release" section filled out. You will still need to clear the Lien with DMV by bringing the title in to a DMV office. If you bring in the title you can select to have a new title pritned that will reflect the Lien satisfied status, or you can elect to retain the original copy of the title.

Associated Fees

To release the lien there is no fee. However if you elect to receive a new title to reflect that the lien was satisfied, there is a $10 fee for the new title.

How can I pay for my replacement Title?

Plate fees can be paid by cash, check, credit, or debit. Important: payment forms cannot be split between credit/debit and other forms. If you plan on paying with a card, the sum of your payment must go on the card. You may split cash and check
