Titling Services

What you Need

In order to Title a vehicle in the state of Virginia you need to bring in several documents to prove the sale price of the vehicle, and proof of your address.
For In State Vehicles you will need:

  • Virginia Title with the "Assignment of Title by Owner" and "Application for New Owner certificate of Title and Registration" sections filled out.
If it is a new vehicle you need to bring in the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin/Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MCO or MSO).
  • Completed Application for Title and Registration, form VSA 17A , if you have an MCO/MSO
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of purchase price, this can include a buyer's order, bill of sale, or the seller's declared sale price on the title. (Sample Bill of Sale)
  • Record of the odometer reading. If an out of state title does not have an assignment section then Form VSA-5 can be used as an official record of the odometer reading

For out of state vehicles, only a few things extra are needed or changed. In addition to, or in place of the above items you will need:

  • The out of state Title signed over to you, or the Title or Registration card from your preivous state of residence or a branch of United States Armed Forces with your name as the owner.
  • If purchased in the last 12 months, proof of purchase such as a Bill of Sale.

Associated Fees

Additionally you will be required to pay 3% of the purchase price of the vehicle or $35, whichever is larger, in sales tax.
