By 1852 Cedar Grove Cemetery was completely sold out; the City saw the need to create a new cemetery. Land was purchased from the Tunis family, establishing Elmwood Cemetery in 1853. A section of Smiths Creek separated the two cemeteries that were connected by a bridge. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the creek and adjacent marshes were filled in and new grave spaces created. Princess Anne Road now divides the two cemeteries. Elmwood was designed in the Victorian rural park manner that was popular at that time.
