The Wastewater Division ensures that wastewater in Norfolk is managed effectively to protect our residents’ and visitors’ health, safety and quality of life.

Wastewater crews work 24 hours a day maintaining and repairing the system that takes wastewater away from Norfolk homes, businesses and facilities and conveys it to wastewater treatment plants that are operated by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD).

If you're experiencing problems with the wastewater system serving your home or business, call us at (757) 823-1000 . Please call the Department of Utilities before calling a plumber, as your wastewater problem may be in the City infrastructure, not your private plumbing. A Wastewater employee can determine if you need plumbing services. Wastewater crews can not work on your home or business’ private plumbing system.

  How Will You Know You Need a Sewer Repair?

The system in your area may need a repair if you detect:  

• Gray water coming from the clean-out box

• Inability to flush toilets

• Gray water in the street with an odor

• Pavement cave in with gray water

• Strong odor coming from a wastewater pump station
