Ernie Morgan Award of Service Goes to The Friends 0f Sandhills
Department of Utilities a
Major Player in Restoration Project
A coalition of individuals and organizations
has been working hard to clean up and preserve the open space known as "The
Maritime Sandhills", located between the Ocean view Elementary School and
Tidewater Drive. Once filled with trash and neglected, this unique
historic, geological and biological space is now much
cleaner,
monitored regularly and being pursued as a permanent preservation area for
future generations.
While many came forward to work on this
project, local resident and dedicated Norfolk Department of Utilities employee
Kevin Collins personally contributed much to this effort. Kevin
spearheaded a series of clean-up days at the Sandhills, coordinating workforce
volunteers and related help from many city departments, Ocean View Elementary
School, Ocean View Civic League and private businesses.
On November 21, at the Norfolk Environmental
Council Annual Awards luncheon, Kevin accepted the Ernie Morgan Award of Service
on behalf of the hard-working Friends of Sandhills.
