The Burnt Mills Dam is undergoing major safety upgrades
that should be completed by January 2009. During construction the boat ramp will
closed to the public.
Water Resources is a part of the City of Norfolk,
Department of Utilities. We are charged with the maintenance and protection of our most
valuable natural resource: our water supply.
The City of Norfolk owns nine reservoirs: Lake
Whitehurst, Little Creek Reservoir, Lake Lawson, Lake Smith, Lake Wright, Lake Burnt
Mills, Western Branch Reservoir, Lake Prince and Lake Taylor. These bodies of water, along with the Blackwater and Nottoway rivers and Lake Gaston, supply drinking water to more than
800,000 residents of Hampton Roads.
All of our reservoirs are held in watersheds. A watershed is the area
that drains into a body of water. Our watersheds contain residential, commercial and
educational properties. Everyone lives in a watershed, and it is important to understand
how our actions can effect the very water we drink.
The City of Norfolk owns property around each of the these
reservoirs, and there are rules and regulations in place to use this property. See
the list on the left for more information.
We are here to serve you!
