Strategic Direction for Technology
The Information Technology industry moves more quickly than most
other industries with respect to equipment and process
improvements. As a result, businesses developing a long-term IT
strategy must be prepared to modify it on a regular basis to
accommodate industry changes.
Based on the current state of
technology changes anticipated in the next three years, the
Department of Utilities will be focusing more on Web-based platforms
for applications. We also anticipate a broader use of wireless
technology for data communications with field staff, as the wireless
data industry matures.
Moving onto these new platforms will cause
security of sensitive data to move to the forefront of business
plans. We anticipate a closer partnership with Information
Technology and other departments to help us jointly reach our
strategic goals.
Strategically, in the next three to five years, Utilities hopes to
be able to partner with other City departments to implement a
consolidated on-line bill paying system. We believe a system that
allows citizens to submit payment over the Web for any City-provided
service is one way to improve customer service.
