Your Tap Water
Water Quality Reports
The Norfolk Department of Utilities is committed to providing safe, clean drinking water that meets or exceeds all state and federal regulations. Information on compounds found in our water is listed below in the Consumer Confidence Report, also called the Water Quality Report.
For an even more in-depth listing of all compounds we test for, view the quarterly reports. Before you read on, be sure you know these water quality terms (PDF).
Testing Your Water
We ensure that the drinking water flowing from your tap is safe to consume, but sometimes you may find it necessary to have your water quality tested. Utilities' water chemists offer free water quality testing for Norfolk water customers.
Should you feel the need to have your water tested, please contact the Water Quality Lab at 757-441-5678. We also test well water, but for irrigation purposes only, the testing is not intended to determine potability.
Protect your plumbing system and the integrity of the drinking water at your home or business by using a Hose Connection Vacuum Breaker (HCVB). A HCVB is a backflow prevention device. Backflows can occur when there's a drop in pressure and water from an open hose or outdoor connection flows back into your plumbing system. Possibly exposing the system to contaminants.
A HCVB, available at most hardware stores, is an inexpensive solution to backflows. If you have any questions regarding backflow devices or would like more information, the Norfolk Utilities' Office of Cross Connections can help. Call 757-441-5774, extensions 262 or 274. View cross connections testing information and forms.
Fats, Oils and Grease
Make your kitchen a no-grease zone! Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) is an ever growing problem that can affect anyone at anytime. FOG in the sanitary sewer will solidify and build up over time, eventually causing the sewer to overflow into the street, your yard, or even your home. It is important that everyone make every effort to keep FOG from going down the drain. Learn about FOG prevention.
