Previous Release
On August 12, 2014 shortly after 11:00 a.m. a marked Norfolk Police unit witnessed a green Nissan Altima fail to stop at a stop sign near the intersection of Somme Avenue and Alsace Avenue. The police unit activated its lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle for the traffic violation; however, the driver and only occupant of the green Nissan refused to stop and tried to elude the officers. The vehicle continued to violate several traffic laws during the pursuit. The officers then turned off their lights and sirens and terminated the pursuit for public safety. The vehicle continued to drive erratically and ultimately ran off the roadway. The vehicle struck a Dominion Power Pole in the 6200 block of Tidewater Drive, causing the pole to split. Officers responded to the accident scene, provided medical assistance to the driver, and requested Norfolk Fire Rescue respond to the scene as well. The driver was then transported by Norfolk Fire Rescue to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, resulting from the vehicle accident. No other party was injured as a result of the eluding driver’s actions and several traffic related charges are currently pending against the adult driver. At this time, both northbound and southbound lanes in the 6200 block of Tidewater Drive are currently closed while Dominion Power personnel work diligently to repair the damaged power pole. Norfolk Police will remain on scene until all lanes are reopened.

Updates will be released regarding the driver’s identity and pending charges.
