[ARCHIVED] 9-year-old dies at hospital following car crash, 7-year-old seriously hurt

NORFOLK, Va. – A 9-year-old boy has died after being ejected from a van during a car crash Monday evening.

Shortly after 5 pm, police responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of West 27th Street and Llewellyn Avenue.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a Ford pick-up truck was traveling southbound on Llewellyn Avenue and collided with a minivan that was traveling westbound on West 27th Street.

After the truck collided with the minivan, the van continued through the intersection and struck a utility pole.

Two boys, 9 and 7, were ejected from the van during the crash. Both were taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters with serious injuries. However, the 9-year-old child died at the hospital.

The 7-year-old remains in critical condition.

The woman driving the van was also taken to the hospital for treatment. She is expected to recover.

The man driving the truck, and his single passenger, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in tragic crash.

Norfolk Police Traffic Fatality Team is currently on scene, speaking to witnesses, and investigating to determine what caused the accident.

After the investigation is completed, the results will be turned over to the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review and determination of charges.

There were no other vehicles involved or injuries reported.

No further information is available for release at this time.
