Slover Library and ODU celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

NORFOLK, VA – Slover Library and Old Dominion University present a multi-part series of programs celebrating the 50th anniversary of the day astronauts aboard the Apollo 11 landed on the moon for the very first time. 

50th Anniversary Moon Landing Contest—Applications open now through May 31, 2019

The Center for Educational Partnerships at ODU, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, the ODU Libraries, and the Slover Library present the 50th Anniversary Moon Landing Contest “Voyages and Discoveries: Cross-Generational Reflections on the Significance of Space Exploration.” Did you watch the amazing, historic event when man first walked on the moon? What do you think will happen in space exploration in the future? Have a cross-generational discussion of this amazing event and create a written story, poem, or dialogue along with an illustration of your written work.

Slover Library is hosting optional contest workshops to help participants get started. Workshops will be held on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Room 555 on May 3rd and 17th and in Room 290 on May 10th and 24th. Prizes will be awarded in four age categories, based on the younger team members’ ages (4-7, 8-11, 12-15 and 16-19). All entries will be included in a digital anthology available through Norfolk Public Library. Find out more at sloverlibrary.com/moonlandingcontest.

A Journey to Space Storytime—Saturday, July 13, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Slover Library Room 295

To celebrate the release of the PBS film, “Chasing the Moon,” an educator from WHRO will be reading My Journey to the Stars, written by astronaut Scott Kelly, with a fun activity and craft following the storytime.

TAP Presents: The Moon Walk Anniversary—Saturday, July 20 at 2:00 PM. Slover Library Room 555

Slover Library’s Teen Advisory Panel (TAP) invites you to come celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon walk! Dance the moon walk, have galactic snacks, watch the first moon landing, and Space out! We will have a spacey good time!

50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Celebration at Old Dominion University—Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 4:00 PM, Kaufman Lawn at ODU.

To celebrate the moon landing anniversary, there will be activities and games for children, planetarium shows, a robot petting zoo, a drone demonstration and food trucks.  In addition, there will be a physics demonstration, a Moon Rover Simulation, a tour of the robotics lab, and music.  Artifacts from NASA space missions will be on display along with a piece of the Moon.
