[ARCHIVED] The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate officer involved shooting

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) –   Interim Police Chief Michael Goldsmith has requested the assistance of the Virginia State Police with the ongoing investigation of an officer involved shooting that occurred earlier this morning. 

On June 21, 2022, around 5:15 a.m., officers arrived at the 5500 block on Monroe Place to arrest a man who was wanted on several outstanding felony warrants. Upon locating the wanted suspect, officers assigned to the Special Operations Team, identified themselves as police officers to the wanted suspect. After identifying themselves, the suspect began to shoot at the officers. Four Officers returned fire, and the man sustained life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

This is still an active and ongoing criminal investigation. No further details will be released at this time, so as to not hinder the investigation. The suspects identity will be provided at a later time. 

Norfolk Police are reaching out to community members for any witnesses who were near the 5500 block of Monroe Place prior to, or after the incident who may have information. Anyone with information about this shooting and/or witnessed suspicious behavior are encouraged to submit information though the  P3Tips mobile application.
