A ‘Dream Court’ Comes to Ocean View

Second basketball court ribbon cutting in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities and Pepsi Stronger Together

NORFOLK, VA – The City of Norfolk’s Parks & Recreation Department, in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities and Pepsi Stronger Together, will open a Dream Court™ at the East Ocean View Recreation Center, 9520 20th Bay Street, on Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m.

A City basketball court is now transformed into a Dream Court through the generous donations of PepsiCo and its Pepsi Stronger Together initiative. This is the second Dream Court installation completed in Norfolk in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities. The Dream Court is high school regulation size, 50 feet by 84 feet, with two new basketball goals. It features a high-performance PowerGame surface from Sport Court, Nancy Lieberman Charities’ national partner.

Investing in our community’s recreational facilities is critically important to the City of Norfolk because we recognize how much these amenities can improve our residents’ everyday quality of life,” said Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander. “The Dream Court partnership encompasses the greatness of Norfolk’s past, present and future through the combination of a local sporting legend in Nancy Lieberman; the valued support of our business community, including PepsiCo and Sport Court; and most importantly, a brighter future for so many Norfolk children who will get to play and exercise on this wonderful court in the Ocean View area. My thanks to all who played a part in making this dream a reality.”

Since the inception of the Dream Court program in 2010, more than 100 courts have been installed across the United States to make the sport more accessible to children while providing an environment for kids to play.

“In life you want to team up with people who have the same core values to help others. Pepsi Stronger Together does this every day and they have chosen to team up with me to make a difference in the lives of current Lady Monarch basketball players with a $25,000 women’s athletic scholarship and for youth in the East Ocean View community to have a safe and beautiful court to play on for generations to come. I want to thank Derek Lewis and the Pepsi Stronger Together family," said Nancy Lieberman, Basketball Hall of Famer.

"Pepsi Stronger Together and Nancy Lieberman Charities have a shared mission in using our platforms to drive positive change across communities, starting at a local level," said Derek Lewis, President, PepsiCo Multicultural. "This partnership is another way we hope to create access to sport, and the benefits and opportunities it provides, for even more youth in the Norfolk community.”

In addition to this dedication, there will be a Nancy Lieberman Statue and Street Renaming Unveiling on the campus of Old Dominion University outside the Mitchum Performance Center on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 9 a.m. Lieberman is a Basketball Hall of Famer and Old Dominion University alumna, winning two back-to-back championships with the Lady Monarchs in 1979 and 1980.

Both events are open to the public. For more information, visit
