NORFOLK, VA – Norfolk’s Department of Utilities received the Elizabeth River Project’s River Star Business Achievement Level Award. The award recognizes businesses and organizations that have documented significant results in pollution prevention and wildlife habitat efforts.

The department’s Reservoir Management Crew received specific acknowledgement for its use of an Aquatic Plant Harvester to mitigate the growth of invasive aquatic plants, which significantly contributed to the health of a vital local water source. The harvester removed more than 200,000 pounds of harmful aquatic plants from Lake Whitehurst last year.

Other reasons cited for the recognition include the department’s work with lakeside homeowners to promote responsible shoreline management and upgrades made to HVAC and electrical systems at the Moores Bridges Water Treatment Plant to improve its efficiency and resilience.
