City Hall South Garage to Close

Short-term parking available in new East Street surface lot

City Hall South Garage to Close
Short-term parking available in new East Street surface lot

NORFOLK, VA – The city will soon begin work to demolish the City Hall South Garage at Union and Main streets across from City Hall.

This garage was built in the 1960s, at the same time as the recently demolished City Hall North garage. At more than 50 years old, both garages exceeded their useful life.

A structural consultant has recommended the closure and demolition of City Hall South Garage. It will close permanently at the close of business on Friday, September 13.

Effective Saturday, September 14, visitors and those conducting business in City Hall, the Courthouse, the Sheriff’s Office and the jail should use the paid hourly/daily parking in the new East Street surface lot located at the corner of E. Main Street and East Street on the same site of the former City Hall North garage. This lot is first come first serve. Additional parking is available in the MacArthur North Garage, accessed by Market Street.  Ample free 45-minute parking and handicap parking is available underneath the I-264 overpass.

We strongly encourage those expecting longer parking stays – lawyers, jurors or witnesses for example – to use park in the MacArthur North Garage.

Light rail is available at the Monticello and MacArthur Square stations.
