    August 12, 2021 - December 12, 2021

Chrysler Museum of Art, Glass Project Space

Inspired by nature, the art of Dafna Kaffeman conveys the complexities of life in modern Israel. Kaffeman creates exquisitely crafted plant replicas using flame-worked glass. These botanical specimens reflect the natural world of the artist’s homeland. The glass plants are combined with Hebrew and Arabic words printed or embroidered on soft white fabric, including handkerchiefs which are often associated with Jewish cultural practices of celebration, commemoration, sacrifice, and mourning. Each plant the artist renders in glass has its own cultural and historical meaning.

    @
Chrysler Museum of Art, McKinnon Galleries

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Norfolk’s greatest modern building: Scope Arena. Designed by renowned Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with local architectural firm Williams and Tazewell, its soaring struts lift the dome and paradoxically let light in from below, not above as in traditional domed structures. This exhibition will follow Nervi’s career as an architect in Italy through many projects, including airplane hangars, cathedrals, exhibit halls, and skyscrapers, giving visitors an understanding of the unique architectural achievement of Scope and its place in the history of modern architecture.

Directed by Brittney S. Harris Esther, an African-American seamstress in 1905 New York, is a practical woman with quiet dreams. She hopes for lovely things— fine fabric, beautiful words, a loving touch, while supporting herself making exquisite negligees and corsets for women across the social strata. When a distant suitor reaches out through poignant and sensitive letters, her life changes. Through friendship, betrayal, and hope, she stitches a new life, a crazy quilt homely to look at but warming to the soul. Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel is a ‘delicate tapestry woven from hope, longing and a wistful acknowledgment of disappointments reckoned with and limitations faced.’ - San Diego Union-Tribune Free parking is available in Garage D, 1070 W. 45th St.
