  2. Chrysler Museum – If You Thirst for a Homeland: Flame-worked glass by Dafna Kaffeman

    August 12, 2021 - December 12, 2021
Chrysler Museum of Art, Glass Project Space

Inspired by nature, the art of Dafna Kaffeman conveys the complexities of life in modern Israel. Kaffeman creates exquisitely crafted plant replicas using flame-worked glass. These botanical specimens reflect the natural world of the artist’s homeland. The glass plants are combined with Hebrew and Arabic words printed or embroidered on soft white fabric, including handkerchiefs which are often associated with Jewish cultural practices of celebration, commemoration, sacrifice, and mourning. Each plant the artist renders in glass has its own cultural and historical meaning.

  3. Chrysler Museum – Pier Luigi Nervi: Art and Science of Building

    October 1, 2021 - February 27, 2022
Chrysler Museum of Art, McKinnon Galleries

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Norfolk’s greatest modern building: Scope Arena. Designed by renowned Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with local architectural firm Williams and Tazewell, its soaring struts lift the dome and paradoxically let light in from below, not above as in traditional domed structures. This exhibition will follow Nervi’s career as an architect in Italy through many projects, including airplane hangars, cathedrals, exhibit halls, and skyscrapers, giving visitors an understanding of the unique architectural achievement of Scope and its place in the history of modern architecture.

  6. Offsite Gallery opening reception "Alpha/Beta" by Trotter Hardy & Caroline Garrett Hardy

    December 10, 2021, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Norfolk Arts' Offsite Gallery at MacArthur Center

Join Norfolk Arts for an opening reception at their Offsite Gallery at MacArthur Center. With references to Japanese artistic traditions, Chinese robes and Tibetan iconography, Trotter Hardy and Caroline Garrett Hardy take a radically different approach to art, but share a strong common theme: a fascination with Asian culture as expressed in art and spirituality. Trotter's photos reflect a calm and minimalist single-mindedness akin to simple Japanese and Chinese ink brush drawings. Caroline's paper kimonos are characterized by a profusion of colors, textures, shapes, symbols and words echoing Japanese design aesthetics. On view through January 28, 2022: M-Sat, 10am-8pm & Sunday's 12-6pm Note: Holiday hours are consistent with MacArthur Center operating hours.
