Experience the work of Vietnamese artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen with his 2020 film, The Boat People in the Chrysler Museum’s video space, The Box, and one of his sculptures on view in the Museum’s Asian galleries.

Inspired by nature, the art of Dafna Kaffeman conveys the complexities of life in modern Israel. Kaffeman creates exquisitely crafted plant replicas using flame-worked glass. These botanical specimens reflect the natural world of the artist’s homeland. The glass plants are combined with Hebrew and Arabic words printed or embroidered on soft white fabric, including handkerchiefs which are often associated with Jewish cultural practices of celebration, commemoration, sacrifice, and mourning. Each plant the artist renders in glass has its own cultural and historical meaning.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Norfolk’s greatest modern building: Scope Arena. Designed by renowned Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with local architectural firm Williams and Tazewell, its soaring struts lift the dome and paradoxically let light in from below, not above as in traditional domed structures. This exhibition will follow Nervi’s career as an architect in Italy through many projects, including airplane hangars, cathedrals, exhibit halls, and skyscrapers, giving visitors an understanding of the unique architectural achievement of Scope and its place in the history of modern architecture.

Presented in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.’s transformative gift of art to the Chrysler Museum of Art, Building a Legacy: Chrysler Collects for the Future presents recent and promised gifts of art that will shape the collection for the next generation of museum visitors.

From its inception, “Arts For Life” has brought together internationally recognized local artists and this year is no different. Performances this year will include appearances from Hampton Roads leading arts organizations like Todd Rosenlieb Dance, Virginia Ballet Theatre, Actor’s Workshop of Virginia and The Governor’s School for the Arts, amongst others, in a benefit concert that raises awareness and grants support to LGBT Life Center. This performance will be ASL interpreted by Mindy Brown. After the performance, all guests are invited to a post-concert reception at Gershwin’s where auction items donated by community members will raise additional funds LGBT Life Center. The event is produced by all volunteers including the artists and 100% of proceeds will be donated to LGBT Life Center in honor of World AIDS Day 2021.

Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world. Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, they have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered.
