  1. Waterways to Freedom Tour: Underground Railroad Sites in Norfolk

    June 19, 2021, 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM

    Join Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, author of Waterways to Freedom, on historic June 19th, for a walking tour of Underground Railroad sites in downtown Norfolk. Hundreds, if not thousands, of African-Americans made daring escapes to the north via ships visiting Norfolk's waterways. Learn more about Norfolk's heritage and implications for the present. The tour begins at Fountain Park next to the BB&T building at 500 E. Main Street. The Department of Neighborhood Development can validate parking for the Fountain Park Garage adjacent to Fountain Park. The address for the garage is 130 Bank St, but it can be entered around the corner on Plume St. Although breaks will be provided, please wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and you may want to bring a water-bottle. REGISTRATION IS LIMITED, but you can add your name to the waiting list if the tour fills.

  2. Family Day: A Juneteenth Celebration

    June 19, 2021, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM @ The Chrysler Museum of Art

    Honor African Americans past and present who fought for freedom during the Chrysler Museum’s Juneteenth celebration. Learn about the history of Juneteenth during performances by the Virginia African American Cultural Center. Enjoy live outdoor music by Hot Gumbo Brass Band. Throughout the day, complete craft activities, or pick up a kit to take home and embark on a scavenger hunt for artworks by African American artists. Schedule 10:30 a.m. Performance by the Virginia African American Cultural Center 11 a.m. Hot Gumbo Brass Band plays outside 12:30 p.m. Performance by the Virginia African American Cultural Center 1 p.m. Hot Gumbo Brass Band plays outside Presented in partnership with the Virginia African American Cultural Center.     Celebrate Juneteenth with NPL! Learn about Juneteenth through the lens of African American storytelling with Moth StorySLAM Champion, Carol Moore. Her style of storytelling that is comedic, conversational, and authentic. She has performed with organizations such as Story District, Better Said Than Done, Tales and Ales, Speak Up Storytelling, and the TELL: Pittsburgh Storytelling Series. She is a member of the National Storytelling Network, and serves as CEO and Head Public Speaking Coach of Carol Moore Presents LLC.   4. Juneteenth Celebration & Bloomberg Asphalt Art Dedication - The Gathering Place

    Norfolk's 2nd Bloomberg Asphalt Art mural "The Gathering Place" was created in honor of Juneteenth by local artist Dañetta Evans & community volunteers. Join Norfolk Arts for a Juneteenth Celebration & Asphalt Art Dedication. Dañetta's design features images highlighting the history of Double Dutch, African American quilting & the Underground Railroad. Following the dedication featuring a reading of an original poem created in recognition of Juneteenth by Ayana Askew, Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador & remarks by Councilwoman Royster, enjoy a Double Dutch showcase, free food from Crop Circle Gourmet, "Copsicles" courtesy of the NPD, photo booth, music by DJ Jokin' Joe & more. This is the 2nd Asphalt Art project being created via a Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative grant Norfolk Arts received together with the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia.
