Chrysler Museum of Art, McKinnon Galleries

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Norfolk’s greatest modern building: Scope Arena. Designed by renowned Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with local architectural firm Williams and Tazewell, its soaring struts lift the dome and paradoxically let light in from below, not above as in traditional domed structures. This exhibition will follow Nervi’s career as an architect in Italy through many projects, including airplane hangars, cathedrals, exhibit halls, and skyscrapers, giving visitors an understanding of the unique architectural achievement of Scope and its place in the history of modern architecture.

Last chance to see "Scene," a national exhibition of unique 2D and 3D artworks that are inspired by cities, towns, landmarks, and places. What scene inspires the work of today’s artists? Is it a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, or a buzzing city full of light and noise? Is it a natural wonder, or a famous man made landmark? The open call for Scene received 387 submissions from 109 artists from 33 states. 51 pieces from 39 artists from 18 states (11 Virginian artists) were selected for this exhibition. Suzanne Yurdin is a contemporary abstract painter who lives and works in Falls Church, VA. As the youngest of four, she was always playing outside or participating in sports. Her paintings pay homage to that love of nature and sense of adventure.
