  1. d'Art Center presents "Surface: Textures and Patterns in Artwork"

    Surface is an exhibition of artworks that highlights the use of textures and patterns in artworks from across the country. We want our patrons to be able to “feel” the textures in the work with their eyes, and to get lost in all the patterns! The call reached 39 states. 218 artists submitted for a total of 781 submissions. d’Art’s Gallery Manager, and the juror selected 64 pieces from 60 artists from 23 states (9 Virginians)! This is a juried exhibition, and was co-curated by gallery manager Amanda Bradley, and exhibition juror and artist, Jorge A. Saenz. Jorge also has a piece on display in the Surface Exhibition.

  2. Chrysler Museum – M.C. Escher: Infinite Variations

    The Chrysler Museum will present more than 150 works by M.C. Escher from the collection of Paul and Melinda Firos of Athens, Greece in M.C. Escher: Infinite Variations. The exhibition will showcase works that span Escher’s career, including the iconic Day and Night, in which two flocks of birds in flight blend into Holland’s landscape, and Ascending and Descending, a 1960 print of an impossible building with a staircase that mirrors a möbius strip. This comprehensive exhibition will trace the imagery that made Escher one of the world’s most recognized artists and feature the full range of media in which he worked, including woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, and even a lithography stone.

  3. d'Art Center presents "Flourish: A National Juried Exhibition Featuring Floral and Botanical Artworks" and Rebecca King Hawkinson in the Vault.

    The open call for artists reached 39 states. 268 artists submitted for a total of 996 submissions, and d’Art’s Gallery Manager, and the juror, Diane Husson, selected 65 pieces from 58 artists from 25 states for the exhibition! Flourish is an exhibition of artworks that feature floral and botanical artworks from across the country! Artist Rebecca King Hawkinson maintains a working studio practice in Black Mountain, teaching students, making new paintings, and taking portrait commissions. The artist regularly still travels to Europe to paint in the countryside. This April the artist returns to the South of France to create new works of art.   4. Virginia Opera and Virginia Arts Festival present "The Sound of Music"

    One of the most beloved musicals of all time, The Sound of Music, became a Broadway legend when it opened in 1959, capturing five Tony Awards, including Best Musical; the film version released in 1965 won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The musical classic leaps to life this spring in a new fully-staged production by critically acclaimed director Matt Kunkel and conducted by Rob Fisher (Virginia Arts Festival Goode Family Artistic Advisor for Musical Theater and American Songbook), renowned on Broadway, television, and in recordings for his "nimble baton" that draws "attention to the intricacy and wit of the orchestrations" (The New York Times). Fisher's conducting on the Chicago Lyric Opera's 2014 production of The Sound of Music won rave reviews.

  5. Virginia Opera presents "The Sound of Music"

    NEW FOR 2021-2022 – Add-on a special production of The Sound of Music! Virginia Opera and Virginia Arts Festival are partnering to stage a new, full production of the classic musical in May 2022. Winner of five Tony Awards in 1959 and the basis for the timeless film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, plan to revisit all of your favorite songs with the von Trapps.
