Move beyond

Transitioning into the community after being convicted of criminal charges or incarceration can present a variety of challenges. We know that if people have help in the beginning it improves their chances of success dramatically and that’s better for you, your family and the community. Additionally, people who have been previously involved in the criminal justice system need on-going support regardless if they have ever served time in jail or prison or the length of time passed since conviction. The Norfolk Department of Human Services uses a community based approach to integrate human services and public safety. We work with City of Norfolk residents who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony charge. Our services include assistance with finding employment or getting job training, job search training classes, workshops, peer support groups, case management, assessment and referrals and a mentoring program. We also provide services to youth at-risk of becoming justice involved by facilitating groups and programs that increase social and emotional development or cognitive behavioral interventions.
