Butts Out Norfolk: Cigarettes Are Litter Too

Did You Know? Cigarette Butts Equal Litter
In just one day, over 568 cigarette butts were collected in just 2 city blocks of Norfolk
  • 65% of overall litter is related to cigarettes.
  • 14% of current smokers report owning a pocket ashtray.
  • Cigarette litter is more prevalent in areas where there is existing litter.

How You Can Help
  • Carry a Pocket Ashtray. Get yours by contacting Keep Norfolk Beautiful at 441-1347.
  • Dispose of cigarette litter and packaging in their proper bins. Use receptacles nearby.
  • Don’t throw your cigarette litter out of the car window. Use the car ashtray or container with a secure top such as a bottle to keep our roadways clean.

Norfolk joins Keep America Beautiful's Cigarette butts = litter campaign
Keep Norfolk Beautiful participated in Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) regional pilot campaign, “Cigarette butts = litter,” which  aimed at reducing the impact of cigarette litter throughout the region. The eight-week program began July 1, 2015 and was funded by a $12,500 KAB grant. Norfolk joined six other Hampton Roads municipalities, who each share the goal of reducing the impact of cigarette butt litter throughout the region.
